About Us

Based in the beautiful port of Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall, Troy Players is a friendly, enthusiastic, award winning amateur dramatics group dedicated to the production of plays and theatre of all kind for the entertainment of the general public.

In 1976 a small group of like-minded people, whose interests included amateur dramatics, decided to revive the old dramatic society, which had not operated since before the Second World War, and so Troy Players was born.

Why ‘Troy’, you may ask?

The name was adopted from the second novel of the famous author Sir Arthur Quiller Couch, who writing as ‘Q’ penned ‘The Astonishing History of Troy Town’. It is a farce set around the town of Fowey, which takes on the role of Troy Town.

Our first production, in 1977, was of three one-act plays presented at the old junior school, after which we moved to the Town Hall in Fowey.

Since then we have aimed to stage at least four diverse productions each year, offering a wide variety of entertainment, including drama – modern day and costume, comedies, thrillers, farce, and shows. We also stage some productions with the profits from the run going to charity.

Our productions are mainly staged in January, May, July and October of each year

The May production forms part of the programme for annual Daphne du Maurier Festival of Arts and Literature, which takes place in Fowey. The festival programme features World famous artists from the fields of literature, films, radio, television and music, as well as many talented artists and musicians from all over Cornwall.

As well as staging plays and theatre of all kinds we also have an active social calendar. In the summer we hold the President’s Party, which is held in her beautiful garden. We also take the ever-popular evening boat trip up the river Fowey to the picturesque village of Lerryn with a return stop-off at the equally beautiful Golant. At the end off the year we hold our Christmas Dinner, the courses of which are interspersed by members doing their ‘party pieces’ to the great enjoyment of everyone present. We also organise other social activities for our members such as quiz nights, play readings and visits to see other amateur and professional performances.

Although we are an amateur group we consider our audiences to be paramount and therefore we always do our utmost to present them with as professional a performance as possible each and every time.

Planning and staging a production is a team effort. There are many facets to staging a production and what the audience sees is the culmination of the input of a great many people. We are always on the lookout for new members of all ages, enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go is the only requirement. So, if you are interested in any aspect of amateur dramatics please get in touch.
